€1m funding boost welcomed for bettystown cycling and pedestrian scheme
A €1 million funding allocation for a new cycling and pedestrian scheme on Eastham Road in Bettystown has been welcomed as a major boost for road safety and connectivity in East Meath.
The funding will support the development of dedicated walking and cycling infrastructure along Eastham Road, a key local route, providing safer links between Donacarney and Bettystown. The project aims to improve safety for all road users while encouraging more people to walk and cycle for everyday journeys.
Welcoming the announcement, Fine Gael Councillor Sharon Tolan described the funding as “fantastic news for East Meath”.
“Eastham Road is a busy and important route, and this scheme will make a real difference for pedestrians, cyclists, families and commuters who use it every day,” she said. “It’s about creating safer streets and giving people real, sustainable travel options.”
Cllr Tolan said the project aligns with both local and national objectives to promote active travel, reduce traffic congestion and support healthier communities.
“Investment like this shows a clear commitment to building safer, healthier and more connected communities,” she added. “I’m particularly pleased to see funding directed towards infrastructure that will benefit people of all ages, from schoolchildren to older residents.”
She also welcomed the inclusion of safety improvements and public lighting at Bettystown Cross, which she said has been a dangerous location for a number of years.
The Eastham Road Cycling and Pedestrian Scheme is expected to enhance connectivity between residential areas and local amenities, while also supporting climate action goals by reducing reliance on private car use.
Cllr Tolan said she is hopeful the project will move to tender and construction stage later this year.
