Work commences on €22m Navan wastewater upgrade
Uisce Éireann has recently commenced a major upgrade of the wastewater network at Farganstown, Navan, representing a €22m investment in the wider Navan area.
This vital project will increase the capacity of the wastewater network to enable the development of 1,600 new homes in the short term, while also allowing for significant further development in the longer term.
The works involve the construction of a new wastewater pumping station and 2.4km of sewer pipeline to cater for the future growth and development of the Navan area. These works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s Growth and Development Programme and commenced in October.
This significant upgrade will enhance the capacity and resilience of the existing wastewater infrastructure, providing more reliable services for current and future residents and businesses, and accommodate future population growth of the surrounding area.
James Browne T.D., Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, welcomed the commencement of work on the project. He said: “The commencement of this project is very welcome news for the community in Farganstown, Navan. Improvements in the capacity of the wastewater network will bring tangible benefits and provide the required infrastructure to service existing and new developments in the area, including much-needed new housing.
“Continued investment in public water services is essential to facilitate housing delivery. That is why in the recent Budget and through the National Development Plan we have increased Uisce Éireann’s funding to accelerate the delivery of water infrastructure and support the development of new homes across the country.”
Uisce Éireann’s Padraic Fitzgerald also welcomed the commencement of works.
“The Farganstown Wastewater Network Upgrade project will not only address current capacity constraints but will also facilitate planned residential development, helping to unlock housing and economic potential in the area. We are working closely with developers to ensure the infrastructure is in place to enable the delivery of essential new homes for the community.”
This project is being delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s national Growth and Development Programme and is being carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by GMC Utilities Group Ltd, with completion expected in late 2027.
Works are ongoing at Navan Wastewater Treatment Plant, with works commencing on the construction of a new wastewater pump station near St Mary’s Cemetery in the coming weeks.
Pipelaying works at the R153 Boyne Road are anticipated to commence next summer and will require localised road closures. Local and emergency access will be maintained. Uisce Eireann says details of road closures and associated diversion routes will be communicated in advance.
