Road at Jamestown Bog deteriorating with 'potholes as big as haycocks'
ANN CASEY
The road that runs adjacent to Jamestown Bog in Tullaghanstown off the main Navan-Athboy road has been described "sinking" and "treacherous" by local residents who have warned it is becoming extremely dangerous.
"There were a couple of accidents in the last few years," says local resident, Pat Gough.
One huge hump in the middle of the L4000 road has caused major problems, with many local motorists having sumps damaged, according to local resident Mr Gough.
"The road is in a terrible state. It is sinking away at the sides. At one part, there is a hump about the size of a haycock, you have to go either right or left of it or your car will be destroyed.
"The first 100 metres of the the road, from you leave the Navan road is fine but then it just deteriorates. The road is sinking the edges are falling away, it is full of potholes.
""It is very dangerous , particularly if you don't know the road. If you're coming from the Navan road, you won't have built up enough speed, but If you are coming from the Greetiagh direction and you don't know the road, it could be lethal.
Mr Gough recalled travelling on the road one evening last August. "A car passed me followed by a squad car with the lights flashing. All I could see ahead of me was the blue light jumping up and down over the potholes."
"The road has been allowed get into a terrible state and we really need it resurfaced and stabilised."
"There has been no work done on that road since long before Covid. I'd say it is eight years since anything was one with it.
"There are a lot of people using that road. We have a lot of people living in the area and in the evenings it is very busy with people going to Kells avoiding the tolls.
"You have a lot of people using that road during the summer while working on the bog and a lot of very heavy traffic use it travelling to Carnaross mart."
Meath County Council has been approached for comment.
