Cumann na mBunscol Finals: Gaelscoil na Cille prove too strong for valiant Trim girls

GIRLS DIV 3

The signs were ominous from early on that Gaelscoil na Cille Ashbourne would be too strong for Gaelscoil na Boinne Trim in the Girls Div 3 final at Ashbourne on Sunday, and that's how it transpired as they ran out 2-12 to 1-2 winners.

The Trim school can have no complaints, they were beaten by a physically stronger and more cohesive Ashbourne side who looked very accomplished throughout the field.

Defensively strong Gaelscoil na Cille looked like they wouldn't even concede a score and it took until the 26th minute before they did with Louisa Ní Chonalláin on target to leave Gaelscoil na Boinne 0-1 to 1-7 adrift at the break.

That deficit could have been greater were it not for several outstanding saves from goalkeeper Darcie Ní Dhonnchaidh.

After Sadhbh Nic Giolla Ruaidh opened the scoring for Ashbourne, Ní Dhonnchaidh was forced into action to save two shots from Georgia Ní Chatháin.

The outstanding Belle Ní Raghaillaigh also hit the crossbar in that spell, but she did find her range in the sixth minute to double Gaelscoil na Cille's lead.

Further scores from Hannah Ní Mharcaigh (two), Ciara Ní Shúilleabháin and Georgia Ní Chatháin stretched the Ashbourne side's lead to 0-6 to 0-0 and when Saoirse Ní Longáin saw her point attempt drop to the net it put the game beyond doubt eight minutes before half-time.

Saoirse Ní Longáin added another point and was also denied two goals by fine saves from Darcie Ní Dhonnchaidh, while Grace Ní Bhléine hit the post before the Trim side got their only score of the half.

The one-way traffic continued after the resumption with Grace Ní Bhléine tagging on her side's second goal. Four points from Belle Ní Raghaillaigh (one free) and one from Saoirse Ní Longáin made it 2-12 to 0-1 with 12 minutes remaining.

As Ashbourne emptied their bench Trim created a few chances with India Nic Pháidín hitting 1-1 to put some gloss on her side's scoreline, but it was Gaelscoil na Cille's day.
