ALDI Invests €5 Million in Green Energy at Meath Stores
ALDI Ireland has announced a €5 million investment in green energy solutions, with its Meath stores among the first to benefit.
As part of a nationwide solar retrofit programme, the Clonee, Laytown, and Trim stores received new solar panels, which were completed on Friday, 7th November, marking a major step in the retailer’s sustainability journey.
The two-year programme, delivered in partnership with Greenvolt Next Ireland, will retrofit 44 stores nationwide, beginning with 22 stores in 2025 and another 22 in 2026. Each installation features 288 solar panels and is expected to generate around 100,000 kWh annually — enough to power a washing machine for over 1,000 cycles. The solar energy will supply roughly 30% of each store’s electricity needs.
Rachel Nugent, Sustainability Manager at ALDI Ireland, said the initiative reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to energy efficiency.
“At ALDI, we are committed to continually investing in green solutions that improve energy efficiency and reduce our environmental impact,” she said. “We’re excited to launch this solar retrofit programme, beginning with 22 stores in 2025 and continuing with even more in 2026.”
The solar retrofit is designed to lower electricity consumption and costs, reduce reliance on the national grid, and help safeguard energy supply, all while supporting ALDI’s commitment to sustainable growth and low prices for customers.
Owen Power, CEO of Greenvolt Next Ireland, said ALDI’s large retail roofs make solar installations straightforward, low maintenance, and effective for meeting climate goals.
“Major retailers like ALDI have a quick and easy route to adopting renewable energy,” he said. “It is fantastic that ALDI is seizing the benefits of solar to meet its climate goals, reduce energy costs, and cut reliance on the grid. We are thrilled to be ALDI’s chosen delivery partner in harnessing solar power.”
The partnership also positions Greenvolt Next Ireland for growth, allowing the company to bring on new contractors and double its retail photovoltaic output in 2025, strengthening its position as a leading renewable energy supplier in Ireland.
The rollout at the Meath stores is part of a broader effort by ALDI to implement greener, more energy-efficient solutions across its national network, supporting long-term cost management and reducing environmental impact.
