Carberry continues family legacy in Crown Oaks

Thomas Carberry, the eldest sibling of Paul, Nina, Peter and Philip trained Strictly Business to win the Crown Oaks in Flemington earlier today

Thomas Carberry, the eldest sibling in the famous racing family, had his finest moment as a trainer today in Australia when he sent out Strictly Business to win the Crown Oaks at Flemington under Irish-born rider John Allen.

The 13/2 shot was a three-and-a-half-length winner. The 4/5 favourite, Getta Good Feeling, who had finished in front of Strictly Business in a trial race last Saturday, could only manage sixth place.

Thomas’ legendary father Tommy was crowned Ireland's champion jockey on four occasions. Thomas is the eldest sibling of Paul, Nina, Peter and Philip who all enjoyed memorable careers in the saddle.

Paul Carberry was associated with many great horses during an illustrious riding career, including the likes of Harchibald, Florida Perl and Beef or Salmon. Nina Carberry who is a Member of the European Parliament, rode seven winners at the Cheltenham Festival. Philip won the 2006 Irish Grand National with Point Barrow and the 2007 Champion Hurdle with Sublimity.

An overjoyed Thomas Carberry spoke to the media after the race.

"It's brilliant, isn't it? After Nina won a race at Cheltenham a few years ago, I rang Timmy Hyde and said to him, 'Timmy, they keep raising the bar, what am I going to do?' He told me I had to raise the bar as well. I think maybe we've done that today. Dad winning the Grand National was brilliant but I suppose we have to make our own mark".
