Boyerstown NS’s Zara Metry received the Spirit of the Final award from the Meath Chronicle’s Jimmy Geoghegan. Gerry Shanahan'C'mon Boyerstown' proclaimed the large green and yellow sign that was carried by one the school's supporters before this Girls Div 4 final got underway under the midday sun at Trim on Wednesday last.
Presumably the same supporter was carrying the banner a little higher and with a little bit more pride after the team secured the title with resounding 6-8 to 1-2 victory over a brave and battling Drumconrath team.
Boyerstown took an early grip on this encounter. They led 3-5 to 1-1 at the interval and while the Drums never stopped grafting they found it difficult to contain the waves of attacks that descended on them. Others might have given up - Drumconrath never did. Not for a second.
Boyerstown were worthy champions indeed with Zara Metry capping a powerful performance with a personal tally of 3-3.
She was constantly driving forward with the best of her goals arriving just before the break when she she embarked on a mazy solo run before she shot home.
All around her Boyerstown had star performers including Erin Matthews, Kayla Fitzpatrick, who hit 1-2, and Anna Matthews, who also capped her display with not one but two super goals.
Drumconrath's goal was scored by the outstanding Niamh McCluskey. It too arrived after another brilliant solo run that carried McCluskey through the heart of the Boyerstown defence. Marianne McMahon and Ella Flanagan also pointed for Drumconrath.
McMahon was unfortunate not to net a goal herself. She was only denined by a wonder save from Boyerstown's Eve Cleary. Drumconrath's Ellen McDermott was also heroic in the way she got a great block to deny Boyerstown's Lana Conaty what seemed a certain goal. Moments liked that insured this was a gripping contest from start to finish.
