Gardai arrest man after alleged assault of two females
Gardaí investigating an alleged assault of two females on North Strand Road, Dublin 1 on Friday 24th October 2025, have arrested a man.
The man, aged in his 30s, is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda Station in the Dublin Metropolitan Region.
Two women who were canvassing in support of Catherine Connolly in north Dublin were allegedly assaulted.
The incident occurred as Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald joined the canvass, a party spokesman said.
A video posted online shows a man approaching a canvass team for Ms Connolly and shouting threats to “deck” and “slap” some of them.
It was reported to gardaí that two females were assaulted on North Strand Road in Dublin shortly before 4pm on Friday.
They did not require medical treatment at the scene but gardai said they understand one of the females has since attended the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for further assessment.
They have appealed to anyone with camera footage of the incident to provide it to gardaí.
A spokesman for Sinn Féin said: “A man assaulted a young woman who was part of a team getting out the vote near the Five Lamps in the north inner city.
“The gardaí were called and are now investigating the matter.
“The woman has been brought to hospital for medical examination.
“This happened as Mary Lou McDonald joined the canvass team."
