A call on Meath County Council to install cushion speed ramps on the Rathaldron Road in Navan adjacent to Silverlawns, Abbeygrove and Ferndale where “speeding traffic is becoming problematic” was made by Cllr Francis Deane at last week's meeting of Navan Municipal Council.
He called for the ramps in "anticipation of the LDR4 link road opening from Clonmagadden to the Kells Road".
Cllr Deane was told that the last traffic counts taken on Ratholdron Road in August 2023 recorded an average speed of 49mph and an 85 percentile of 60 mph. The posted speed at this location is 50mph. The recorded speeds are in line with the results in the RSA Free Speed Survey for roads of this type with a 50kmph speed limit.
The meeting heard a new traffic management policy is to be presented to the next Strategic Policy Committee and if adopted, the council will assess future traffic management schemes in line with this policy to help invest in a way that delivers the maximum overall contribution to road safety. In the meantime, the council proposes to undertake further speed surveys on the Rathaldron road post the opening of LDR4 and assess the results in the context of the new policy.
Also, a call for the extension of the 60km per hour speed limit on the Proudstown Road in Navan to be extended to include the entrance/exit at the racecourse was made by Cllr John Duffy the meeting of Navan Municipal Council.
"This is now necessary given the increased daily activity at the racecourse and additional traffic entering and exiting Donoghmore Lane. This was included as part of a detailed design for this area carried out by Meath County Council a number of years ago.
"There is a new adventure centre there too, so it is very busy," he said. Cllr Duffy was told a speed limit assessment would be carried out on this section of road when the new Guidelines for Setting Speed Limits in Ireland is issued by the Minister of Transport later this year, as part of the county-wide review.
