Chalk Talk Spotlight: Scoil Naomh Barra going from strength to strength

AISHLING MONAGHAN

Nestled in the heart of the Wilkinstown countryside, Scoil Naomh Barra is a vibrant, welcoming school where learning, creativity, and community spirit thrive. With ten mainstream classes and two AS (Autism Spectrum) classes, the school is proud to provide a supportive and inclusive environment where every child is valued and encouraged to reach their potential.

In recent years, Scoil Naomh Barra has undergone a remarkable transformation, with extensive renovation and expansion elevating the facilities to an exceptional standard. Pupils now enjoy a well-stocked library, a bright sensory room, a new astro turf pitch, a sensory garden, and a wonderful playground that brings daily joy and activity to breaktimes.

Excitingly, the development continues - construction on a brand-new classroom is set to begin this year, alongside the creation of a new pitch and extended play area on land recently purchased to the rear of the school.

The school’s setting couldn’t be more idyllic, bordered by the scenic Boyne Valley Greenway, which encourages outdoor learning and exploration. Directly across the road, the Wilkinstown Community Centre offers further opportunities for play, sport, and connection.

At the heart of Scoil Naomh Barra lies a strong Catholic ethos, centred on respect and care for others. Under the guidance of principal Mr Minnock, the staff at Scoil Naomh Barra are dedicated to helping every child thrive and feel fully prepared for the journey ahead.

Taking Centre Stage

After last year’s resounding success with Oliver Jr., the spotlight shone once again on Scoil Naomh Barra as pupils from 3rd to 6th Class performed Matilda JR at the Solstice Arts Centre in Navan.

With more than 90 children in the cast, the two-night show was a celebration of music, dance, and theatre, showcasing the school’s incredible creative energy. Under the direction of SNA Sharon Carroll and choreographer Aíne Farrelly, the young performers dazzled the audience with their talents, earning a well-deserved standing ovation.

Productions like these are now a much-loved tradition at the school, staged every two years. They give pupils not only a chance to shine on stage, but also create lifelong memories.

A warm welcome for Junior Infants

A very special welcome has been extended to the school’s newest pupils, the Junior Infants, who have already settled beautifully into school life under the gentle guidance of their teacher, Ms. Daly.

Their first weeks have been filled with fun and friendship, from colourful art sessions and storytime with Mr. Minnock, to “Buddy Time” with the 6th Class pupils. Each infant is paired with an older student, creating meaningful bonds that blend reassurance with responsibility - a wonderful reflection of the kindness that defines Scoil Naomh Barra.

Fiona, the school Therapy Dog

Adding to the warmth of daily life at the school is one very special member of staff, Fiona, the school’s much-loved therapy dog.

Gifted to the school by My Canine Companion, Fiona is part of a two-year “puppy in training” programme and has already brought immeasurable joy, comfort, and calm to pupils and staff alike. After a summer spent with Ms. Daly and SNA Margaret Dunne, Fiona bounded back to school to a hero’s welcome - wagging tail and all!

Her presence continues to make a remarkable difference, offering gentle companionship and emotional support to children across all classes.
