Athboy CS student, Jack O’Connor, strikes gold and sets sights on 2028 Paralympics

It was a golden weekend of success for Jack O’Connor, a sixth-year student at Athboy Community School, who competed in the Para National Championships in Coventry on September 6th.

Jack took part in three throwing events, finishing fifth in the Senior Shot Put, winning silver in the Javelin, and then striking gold in the Discus – an outstanding achievement for the talented 17-year-old athlete.

A proud member of Father Murphy’s Athletic Club in Athboy, Jack was competing for Ireland in the senior section of the championships, a remarkable step up given his age.

Born with cerebral palsy, Jack’s journey into Para Sport began when he was just five years old. “From a young age, my family and I looked for ways to improve my coordination,” he explains.

“That’s when I joined Father Murphy’s and started Para Athletics. I struggled to throw a ball at first, but with the help of my coach Paddy Hanley, I built my skills and discovered my passion.”

Jack’s determination soon led him into national and international competitions. At just 14, he began competing in Para Athletics thanks to the support of IWA-Sport and local encouragement. Since then, he has represented Ireland with distinction, including a bronze medal at the Czech Open in 2023, as well as multiple gold medals from competitions in Coventry. Reflecting on his sporting journey, Jack says: “Para Athletics has changed my life. It’s given me confidence, independence, and the mindset to keep pushing no matter what. It’s also connected me with an incredible community of athletes and coaches who support each other every step of the way.”

But Jack’s talents extend well beyond sport. When not training or competing, he plays Wheelchair Basketball with the North East Thunders Club, and helps out on the family farm.

“I’ve got my tractor licence and even built my own hand controls so I can drive it myself,” Jack says proudly.

“Farming keeps me grounded and strong, both physically and mentally.” Looking ahead, Jack has his sights firmly set on the future:

“My big dream is to represent Ireland at the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. That’s what I’m working towards with every training session – step by step, throw by throw.” Jack is also keen to inspire others to take part in oara sport:

“To any young person with a disability, I’d say – give it a go. Para Athletics has something for everyone. It will give you confidence, strength, and purpose. Taking that first step could change your life, just like it did mine.” With medals already under his belt and big goals on the horizon, Jack O’Connor is a shining example of perseverance, talent, and determination; and a student Athboy CS can be truly proud of.
