Man charged in connection to hit and run which led to death of 80 year old cyclist

A man has been charged in connection to a hit and run in which an 80-year-old cyclist died at Boardsmill, Trim on 12th September.

Piotr Broniarczyk (42), from Prezmiero in Poland was in Trim District court charged with three hit and run offences which include failing to remain at the scene of an accident, failing to report the incident, and failing to give assistance to 80-year-old Ned McLoughlin from Trim. The offence took place on the R156 Batterstown, Boardsmill.

The accused was remanded in custody with consent to bail under the conditions of lodging €10,000 in cash fixed maturity, and signs in to Trim Garda Station on the first Monday of every month.

Sgt Eoin Treacy told the court the accused was arrested under arrangement yesterday at Dublin Airport after his flight landed. He returned to the jurisdiction from Poland to meet these charges.

The court heard he was cooperative and gave a full account of the incident to Gardai.

He is currently working as a courier going between Ireland and Poland.

Solicitor Martin Walsh told the court the accused has mental health issues and Judge Eirinn McKiernan has directed that urgent medical attention and assessment is to be given.

Mr Broniarczyk will be remanded in custody with consent to bail to Trim District Court on 23rd September by video link if still in custody.
