Success for Laytown residents looking for improved and accessible walking and cycle links
A new initiative aimed at improving walking and cycling connections in Laytown has taken a significant step forward after Meath County Council approved a motion calling for a safe and accessible link between the Alverno and Beach Grove housing estates.
The project, which will enhance filtered permeability in the area, is designed to make the route safer and more accessible for all residents, including parents with buggies and wheelchair users.
Fine Gael Councillor Sharon Tolan, who tabled the motion, said:
“Local residents have been using this route for years, and it is vital that we now move forward to make it safer and more accessible for everyone, especially parents and grandparents pushing buggies or wheelchair users.”
The proposal aligns with the Council’s policy objective MOV OBJ 29, which focuses on implementing pedestrian permeability schemes and enhancements at appropriate locations. It is also supported by recommendations from the Laytown and Bettystown Walking and Cycling Study Review (October 2021).
Following the motion’s approval, the Active Travel Section of Meath County Council will seek funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA) to carry out enhancements along the route. Meanwhile, the Municipal District Engineer is engaging with local residents to introduce short-term measures to ensure the route remains safe and usable.
Cllr Tolan highlighted the importance of local input in shaping the project:
“The key to the success of projects like this is the continued support and cooperation of residents, particularly those living close to the proposed link. I want to thank everyone who has engaged with me so far and assure you that your views will remain central as this project moves forward.”
The councillor added that the project represents a step toward creating a more connected, walkable, and family-friendly community:
“This is about making our communities more connected, more walkable, and safer for our families. I will continue to work with residents, the Council, and the NTA to ensure this much-needed link is delivered.”
Once completed, the link is expected to provide a safer, more convenient route for pedestrians and cyclists, encouraging sustainable travel and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents in both housing estates.
