Tributes paid to cyclist (80) killed in hit and run
Tributes have been paid to Ned McLoughlin, the cyclist who died following a hit and run near Boardsmill, Trim, on Friday morning.
Mr McLoughlin (80) was a well-known character in the local community and his death has prompted shock and sadness throughout the area.
The collision occurred a short distance from Mr McLoughlin's home at approximately 9.50am on Friday morning and the driver failed to remain at the scene.
Garda investigations into the collision are ongoing and it has been confirmed that Gardai are following a definite line of enquiry. A heavy goods vehicle has been seized for forensic examination. A post mortem on the deceased's remains is due to take place today.
Mr McLoughlin was very involved in athletics in his younger years and Na Fianna Athlethics Club has led tributes to its former member.
Writing on its Facebook page, the club wrote: "Na Fianna Athletic Club would like to pay tribute to former club member Ned McLoughlin who passed away tragically. Ned was a member of our club for many years. He competed as part of our men's senior team at county, provincial and national cross country events throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
"Ned is remembered by his good friends and training buddies photographed along side him:Pat Payne, Seamus Murray, Thomas Halton Ned R.I.P., Brendan Payne R.I.P., John McCloskey and JJ Flattery."
Boardsmill GAA has also expressed its condolences to the McLoughlin Family. "It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Ned McLoughlin on 12th September 2025.
We offer our sincere condolences to the McLoughlin Family at this sad time and keep them in our thoughts and prayers," the club wrote on its Facebook page.
The fatal collision which claimed Mr McLoughlin's life occurred on the R156 Rathmolyon to Ballivor Road at the townland of Batterstown, Ballivor.
Shortly after 9.50am, Gardaí and emergency services responded to fatal hit-and-run collision on the R156. The collision involved a cyclist and a vehicle that failed to remain at the scene.
The male cyclist was discovered unresponsive, and removed to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.
Gardai have appealed to any road users who were in the area around that time to get in touch.
"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area of Batterstown, Ballivor, Co. Meath, between 9.30am and 10.00am on Friday 12th September 2025, are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
"Gardaí are particularly interested in the movements of heavy goods vehicles (rigid or articulated trucks) in the area at the time," Gardai said in a statement on Friday.
Gardai have since confirmed that they are following a definite line of enquiry in relation to the collision and that a heavy goods vehicle has been seized for forensic analysis.
