Search for missing Oldcastle man stood down after discovery of body

Following the discovery of a man’s body, the missing person appeal for Mark Smith, 44-years-old, who was reported missing from Oldcastle, Co. Meath on Friday 2nd May has been stood down.

Gardai confirmed the tragic new following the two-day search that involved Gardai, Meath River Rescue and Meath Civil Defence and volunteers. It follows an extensive search that took in parts of the Mountnugent area.

In a statement, Meath River Rescue said its members had recovered the body of the missing person. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends. May Mark Rest In Peace.

Meath Civil Defence posting on its own social media said: "The missing person search in Oldcastle for Mark Smith was stood down this evening following the recovery of a body. We extend our deepest sympathy to Mark's family and friends. May he Rest in Peace.

"Thank you to all of our volunteers who responded to the search and all who helped since last evening."

Meanwhile funeral details for the late Sean Connaghan (24), whose body was recovered from the River Boyne in Trim after a week long search have been released.

Hi funeral notice reads: "Seán will be very sadly missed and remembered with love always by his loving family, Partner Nikita, daughter Arabella, twin brother Lorcan, Becka, Carter and Millie, Dad Anthony, Audrey, Aoife and Conor, Mam Grace, Luke, Cillian and Saoirse, grandparents Catherine, Hugh, Rosaleen and Tony, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, extended family, neighbours and friends.

"May Seán’s gentle soul Rest in Peace."

Reposing in Massey Bros Funeral Home, Main St, Finglas, D11 ET7P on Tuesday 6th May 2025, from 5-7pm. Removal on Wednesday morning to St. Canice’s Church, Finglas Village, arriving 9:50am for Requiem Mass at 10am, with Burial thereafter in Glasnevin Cemetery.
