Gaelscoil na Mi's maiden voyage into Cumann na mBunscol camogie proved to be a successful one at Trim on Friday as they claimed the Shield title with victory over Lismullen.
Gaelscoil na Mí got off to a flying start with a fantastic goal coming straight from a '45' courtesy of Sophia Hargrove Ní Mhaoltuile. Ní Mhaoltuile followed that up with a point and another goal to give Gaelscoil na Mí an early lead.
Carla Nic Chathmhaoil extended the Ashbourne side’s lead with their third goal as the girls in purple dominated the early exchanges.
Grace Nic Rainne assisted Aimee-Leigh Ní Chochláin Ní Dhúghaill for Ashbourne’s fourth goal as they raced into a 4-1 to 0-0 lead after 10 minutes. Nic Rainne then scored a goal of her own as Lismullen’s defence struggled to keep a lid on the threat of Gaelscoil na Mí's firepower up front.
Jane Reynolds got Lismullen’s tally underway with a goal. Lismullen quietened Ashbourne for a short period but with two minutes left in the half, Ní Mhaoltuile rattled off two points in quick succession before setting up Carla Nic Chathmhaoil to extend Ashbourne’s tally to 5-4.
That meant that Gaelscoil na Mí went in at half-time with an 18-point advantage as they led Lismullen 5-4 to 0-1.
Lismullen’s Grace Gibbons got the scoring underway in the second-half. Sophia Hargrove Ní Mhaoltuile cancelled that score out as she brought her tally to 2-4 with a lovely point. Ní Mhaoltuile struck again moments later, this time raising the green flag with a powerful strike to score Gaelscoil na Mí’s sixth goal.
Poppy Kiernan got on the end of a well-worked Lismullen move to score their second goal as the contest entered the concluding stages. Lismullen could not make any more inroads and Gaelscoil na Mí ran out comfortable winners.
