Late Tommy Grimes to be honoured on his 10th anniversary
The people of Kells will honour former councillor and trade union official, Tommy Grimes, this weekend to make the 10th anniversary of his death.
The Kells Branch of the Labour Party is to change its name to the Tommy Grimes (Kells) Branch and is having a night of celebration this Saturday 11th April at 8.30pm in Maguire's Lounge, Cannon Street, Kells.
“Tommy was the face of Labour in Kells as a sitting councillor for 40 years and an activist for at least another 15 years,” said Kevin Smyth, branch chairperson.
“It was felt that on this his 10th anniversary Tommy should be honoured and we believe that this is a fitting tribute” said Mr Smyth.
“I hope as many people who knew Tommy, who had the pleasure to know him and would like to honour his service to Kells and the Labour movement, can come along on Saturday night for a night of celebration and memories."
Mr Grimes was a former chairman of Kells Town Council and a committed trade unionist. He will also be remembered for his involvement in the Jim Connell memorial event in Crossakiel, commemorating the author of 'The Red Flag'. Following his retirement, he offered advice on workers' rights on an informal basis through Kells People's Resource Centre.
