Risks posed by HGVs and speeding traffic driving calls to strengthen traffic safety measures on the R154
Meath County Council has been urged to provide interim traffic calming measures in Batterstown, where parents are terrified for the safety of children.
The risks posed by heavy goods vehicles, school traffic and pedestrians sharing the same road have been highlighted by Cllr Caroline O'Reilly who said that ramps installed last year have not been enough.
At a recent meeting of Ratoath Municipal Council, a motion by Cllr O'Reilly calling on Meath County Council to review and strengthen traffic safety measures on the R154 through Batterstown, received the support of her fellow councillors.
Cllr O'Reilly said the motion was in response to ongoing concerns from residents and parents regarding safety along the route used by children attending Rathregan National School.
"While the recently installed traffic ramp is welcome, further measures are needed to address the risks posed by heavy goods vehicles, school traffic and pedestrians sharing the same road.
“The ramp that was installed is a positive step, but it is clear from speaking with residents and parents that it is not enough on its own. Children are walking and travelling this route every day, and we need to ensure that the road environment reflects that.”
Cllr O’Reilly said that waiting indefinitely for funding for a traffic calming scheme is not acceptable where safety concerns remain.
“Residents in Batterstown have been raising these concerns for a long time. My focus is on ensuring that practical safety improvements are delivered.”
She noted that there is planning permission for a traffic calming scheme.
"There is currently no definite timeline for the long awaited traffic calming grant, and we cannot simply wait while safety concerns persist. In the absence of confirmed funding, the Council should implement further interim measures, including enhanced road markings, additional ramps or speed tables, and improved signage, to enhance safety in the area pending delivery of the full scheme.
Cllr O’Reilly said she will continue to work with Council officials and the local community to ensure progress to enhance safety in the area.
