Down Syndrome Ireland’s Louth Meath Member Luke is loving Lidl

Ahead of World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st, Down Syndrome Ireland’s (DSI) Louth Meath branch branch is shining a spotlight on one of their most dedicated and hard-working members, Luke Halpin.

Luke Halpin, a 22-year-old from Trim, Co. Meath, has been a dedicated member of the Louth Meath branch for many years. Throughout his time with the branch, Luke has participated in a wide variety of programmes, including the Saturday Club, Aqua Fit, and computer classes

In September 2025, he reached a significant milestone in his employment journey. Working alongside Cara Morgan, Down Syndrome Ireland’s Employment Support Specialist, Luke identified a keen interest in local retail. After an interview with LIDL, he was offered a position as a Retail Assistant.

Luke now works five hours a week across Mondays and Thursdays. His role involves a diverse range of responsibilities, from stacking and product arrangement to customer service and trolley organisation. He has quickly become a valued member of the LIDL team in Trim, enjoying both the professional environment and the independence of earning his own pay check.

Beyond his professional life, Luke is an avid sportsman and music fan. He plays soccer with the Bohemians Down Syndrome Futsal team and the Football for All team. A loyal Liverpool FC supporter, he has travelled to Anfield on several occasions. In his spare time, he enjoys attending concerts, particularly for Oasis and Queen, and playing golf at Ashbourne Golf Club on Saturday mornings.

When asked about the importance of World Down Syndrome Day, Luke said "Because it celebrates me and the love my family has for me and all the things I can do."

DSI's Louth Meath branch is gearing up for World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st and inviting the community to join Luke and the branches many other amazing members at the Time for Tea event.

The celebration will take place on Saturday from 2pm to 4pm at the Wilkinstown Community Centre in Navan.

The afternoon will feature refreshments and treats. Guests can look forward to several activities including Lego club, sensory movement, a dance demo from Barn Door Creative Studios and many other highlights.
