Councillor shocked at condition of derelict site 'eyesore' on approach into Navan
A DERELICT site adjacent at the Academy Square apartment complex in Navan has been described as a major eyesore at the entrance to the town.
Cllr Eddie Fennessy said he was shocked to see the recent condition of the site, which is dangerous and "an awful mess".
"I noticed that the hoarding has been removed and I decided to take a look at the derelict section of Academy Square and I was shocked at what I found. Although it is fenced off and somewhat secure, the site is in an awful mess.
"It is derelict and unsafe were someone to gain access. Dumping is also prevalent onsite."
He said Academy Square has been a bone of contention for councillors for as long as he had been a councillor. "The side elevation of an existing apartment block wasn’t finished and is an eyesore. Having seen what’s on the ground level now, I am very concerned.
"For may people travelling through, to and from Navan, this building and site are the first thing they see. It does not give a good impression of the town. This can have serious implications for trade and employment potential."
"I ask the council has the unfinished section of the Academy Square apartment complex been inspected by the council’s Derelict Site Team? What plans do the council have to make the site, safe, secure and seemly?"
“There has been nothing done with Academy Square for almost twenty years. And I am quite surprised that it hasn’t been recorded on the local Derelict Sites list.
“Having seen how bad it is on the ground, and when you compare it with sites that are on the list in Navan, I really think it ought to be included. Inclusion would bring with it the prospect of financial penalties. This in turn might provide the owners with the impetus required to do something with the site."
Meath County Council has been approached for comment.
