"The holiday doesn't start at the airport, it starts the moment it's booked"... Navan travel agent shares popular getaways for 2026
Aer Lingus research recently highlighted an increase in AI for travel planning and strong early demand for 2026 travel as January sales launched earlier this month.
Key findings showed that 73% of Irish adults said booking a holiday early helps lift the January blues or improves their mood.
85% said it is important to book a trip early in the year so they have something to look forward to.
45% of 18–34 year olds said TikTok inspires their travel choices.
Martin Skelly of Navan Travel commented on the most popular locations and holidays that people have booked this year so far and said that the "January surge" is definitely in full swing.
He said: "Recently we have noticed that the 'type' of holiday rather than a specific destination is top of the list. We find that, for many of our clients, the holiday doesn't start at the airport, it starts the moment they book. That sense of anticipation is a powerful antidote to the winter blues. "
"We’ve noticed a shift toward more “experiential” and “focused” travel. Customers are putting thought into the “type” of holiday they want whether it’s a bespoke cruise, a luxury escape, or a soul-searching trek on the Camino, people are prioritizing quality. Our walking holidays on the Camino de Santiago, with our specialist brand Uwalk.ie, is a particular case in point."
"Social media including TikTok and Instagram might be regarded as the new “brochures” and together with AI they are great for sparking a 'where,' our clients come to us for the 'how."
"They want the peace of mind that comes with a protected, expertly prepared itinerary that respects their budget and matches their personal preferences. We are probably more relevant for customers now than we have ever been because we can quickly cut through the information overload."
Findings showed that social media and AI are reshaping travel planning, but Martin believes that AI is working with the travel industry rather than against it.
"AI has definitely become more visible everywhere, especially in the travel industry. I see it as something that complements the travel industry rather than replacing it. It helps making the earlier stages of research and planning quicker. It is very helpful for brainstorming ideas."
"AI has not replaced the need for experienced travel professionals who can problem solve before, during and after trips. AI does not take responsibility for anything. So many of our customers still value trust and accountability and a real person or business who can support and offer peace of mind. Our job is to keep abreast of the changes and use them to our customers advantage."
Navan Travel have been nominated for an Award at the Irish Travel Industry Awards which takes place in the Mansion House today Thursday 22nd January. They will also be at Holiday World in the RDS from Friday next with their specialist brand Uwalk.ie where we will be showcasing their selection of walking holidays.
