Kilmainhamwood mum’s pride at Jessie’s Golden Globe win
A KILMAINHAMWOOD mother has spoken of her pride after her daughter, actress Jessie Buckley, brought international acclaim back to Meath by winning a Golden Globe for Best Actress at a star-studded ceremony in Los Angeles.
Marina Cassidy, a primary school teacher who spent time teaching at Dunshaughlin National School and now lives in Co Kerry, said the award was a wonderful achievement for her daughter and for the wider Irish film industry.
Speaking to the Meath Chronicle hours after her daughter’s win, Ms Cassidy said: “I grew up in Kilmainhamwood, so that area and Meath are very close to my heart. I am incredibly happy for Jessie and, of course, so proud of her and the whole Hamnet cast on this wonderful achievement.”
Ms Cassidy is the daughter of Thomas and Kathleen Cassidy (née Farrelly) of Kilmainhamwood and studied music at Mount Sackville Convent in Dublin, where she developed a strong appreciation for the arts, a passion she later passed on to her family.
Jessie Buckley, who has gone on to become one of Ireland’s most acclaimed screen and stage performers, won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for her role in Hamnet, continuing an extraordinary run of international success.
Following her win, she is now being widely tipped by industry commentators as a strong contender in the upcoming Academy Awards.
Buckley is no stranger to major accolades. She previously won an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her acclaimed performance as Sally Bowles in Cabaret in London’s West End, further cementing her reputation as one of the most versatile performers of her generation.
Buckley’s Golden Globe success has been warmly welcomed at home.
President Catherine Connolly sent her congratulations on 12th January, praising both Buckley’s achievement and the broader success of the Irish film industry.
“Congratulations to Jessie Buckley on her wonderful achievement in winning a Golden Globe at this year’s ceremony,” the President said.
“This award is a fantastic recognition of her outstanding work and of the continued exceptional success of the whole Irish film industry.”
The President also congratulated fellow Irish nominees Paul Mescal, author Maggie O’Farrell, and production companies Element Pictures and Wild Atlantic Pictures.
