Road closures in place as Drumconrath water supply works commence

As work begins on a multi million euro upgrade to the Drumconrath Water supply, two road closures are now in place until 9th February.

The works have been warmly welcomed in Drumconrath where boil water notices have been a regular feature for many years.

To facilitate the works, the L-7410-0 Cregg and L-74033-0 Posseckstown, Nobber road are closed until Monday, 9th February with diversions in place. Local and emergency access will be facilitated at all times throughout the closure period.

The project comes after many years campaigning in Drumconrath for a new water supply.

"For years, water quality has been very poor and we have had lengthy periods of boil water notices, some lasting for weeks," according to Cllr Michael Gallagher.

Cllr Gallagher said that there had also been a lot of concern about Trihalomethanes (THMs), which may be carcinogenic, in the water.

The upgrade will see a new raw water source at a groundwater well in Posseckstown, and the development of a new water main to take the raw water to the water treatment plant.

The existing treatment facilities, which supplies over 1,200 customers will also be upgraded. This multi-million Euro investment will improve the resilience of the water supply for homes and businesses in Drumconrath and surrounding areas.

John McElwaine, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, said, “The road closures are necessary to ensure the safety of our contractors, road users and the general public while works are underway. We acknowledge that these works may cause some disruption while in progress and thank customers for their patience.”

Coffey Construction is carrying out the project works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, and the project is expected to be completed in late 2026.
