'Lawlessness and wanton destruction'... Condemnation after Duleek arson attack that saw eight cars set ablaze

An arson attack that saw eight cars set on fire in a car park in Duleek has been widely condemned by local representatives.

The incident took place behind Nannys Pub just off Main Street in Duleek at around 10.50pm.

Gardaí are treating the incident of criminal damage. No injuries were reported. Fire crews from both Drogheda and Navan responded to the incident.

Duleek based, Senator Sharon Keogan and Cllr Geraldine Keogan expressed their full and unequivocal condemnation of the actions of the individuals responsible for last night's arson attack in Duleek.

"The attack seems to have been planned and focused.

"It is my understanding that three individuals were involved."

Senator Keogan said she believed that one of the perpetrators sustained burning to his lower body clothing. "He may require medical treatment. In the event that a person presented themselves for attention to doctors, pharmacists, or emergency hospital staff, please immediately notify Gardai."

"Our business community is anchored by Nanny's in Duleek. Since 2022, It has become one of the top pub restaurants in Meath.

"The management and staff are shocked by this incident, and it's important that as a community, we continue to support them.

"In recent years, the Duleek community has made a significant investment in crime prevention measures with our public CCTV, and I have faith in An Garda Síochána ability to identify the perpetrators."

Meath East TD, Deputy Darren O'Rourke said: "This was a shocking act in Duleek last night. Thankfully no one was injured or worse. Thank you to the emergency services for their quick response."

Cllr Stephen McKee stated: "We simply cannot accept the lawlessness and wanton destruction to property that we saw last night in Duleek. We need to let Gardaí do their work I hope those responsible are held to account."

Gardai have been approached for comment.

Any persons who were in the vicinity of Main Street between 10:00pm and 11:15pm on 2nd January and who may have video footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

The scene was held for a technical examination to be carried out.
