Major step forward in campaign for Bettystown train station
A long-running campaign to secure a new train station for Bettystown has taken a major step forward, with confirmation that the National Transport Authority (NTA) will carry out a feasibility study into the project.
The commitment was given during a meeting between Meath Fine Gael councillors and the NTA, hosted by Minister for Justice Helen McEntee.
Fine Gael councillor Sharon Tolan, who has been campaigning for improved public transport links along the East Meath coastline, welcomed the news and said it marked “real progress” for the community.
“This is an important step forward for Bettystown,” said Cllr Tolan. “For too long, our residents have faced limited and overcrowded commuting options. By securing this feasibility study, we now have real momentum towards delivering a sustainable and efficient public transport solution that serves both current and future generations.”
Cllr Tolan said Bettystown and the surrounding areas have experienced rapid population growth in recent years, with existing transport services — particularly Laytown Train Station — struggling to cope with demand.
“A new train station would ease pressure on Laytown, which is already at capacity, while giving residents better access to work, education, healthcare and services,” she said.
She added that the development would also bring wider benefits to the local economy, helping to attract visitors and boost local businesses.
“A train station here would not only make life easier for commuters and families, but it would also open the door to new opportunities for local businesses and services,” she said. “Bettystown has incredible amenities and natural beauty, and improving public transport links will help us welcome more visitors while supporting jobs and growth in our local economy.”
Cllr Tolan thanked the NTA for their engagement and acknowledged the strong community backing that helped keep the issue on the agenda.
“I will continue to work closely with the NTA, Meath County Council, and local stakeholders to ensure this study progresses and that the project remains a priority,” she said.
