Pair returned for circuit court trial on drugs charges

At a recent sitting of Trim District Court, two men in their 60s who are accused of possession of drugs for sale or supply in Meath earlier this year were returned for trial to the sitting of Trim Circuit Court on 21st October.

Matthews Farrell (64), with an address at Lisagoan, Kingscourt, Co Cavan and Joseph Sherry (61), from Allgesh, Smithboro, Co Monaghan, each face a total of six charges, including possession of diamorphine and cocaine, and having the drugs for sale or supply at Castletown, Navan, on 27th May last year.

Each is also accused of possession of a Samsung mobile phone with high encryption intended for use in connection with drug trafficking.

Each accused was served with a copy of the book of evidence in the case on Tuesday, following which they were sent forward at Trim District Court for trial or for sentence on a signed plea of guilty on the direction of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Judge Eirinn McKiernan administered a caution to both accused that they must notify the state within 14 days if they intend to rely on alibi in their defence.

She made a section 56 order for copies of interviews to be provided to the defence teams and remanded each of the accused in custody.

She assigned a solicitor and junior counsel to both men under the legal aid scheme.
