Council seeking further information on plans to redevelop derelict Julianstown hotel

Meath County Council has sought further information on plans to redevelop the site of the long-derelict Old Mill Hotel in Julianstown.

The property, regarded as one of East Meath's biggest eyesores, has been on the derelict sites register in the county since 2018 and plans are now being considered by Meath County Council that would see the Mill House and Old Mill building restored with 62 new homes also proposed for the prominent site at the heart of the village.

Casana Developments Ltd is proposing a mixed-use scheme that would deliver 62 residential units alongside retail, medical and community facilities, as well as a new public riverside park.

The ambitious proposal includes a combination of terraced houses, duplex units, and apartments, ranging from one to three bedrooms.

At the centre of the plans is the conservation and adaptive reuse of two derelict protected structures which have stood in ruins for more than a decade. The Mill House, located at the corner of the site and known locally as the old El Molino Hotel, is to be carefully restored and repurposed as a medical centre.

The adjoining Old Mill building, which has long served as a landmark on the River Nanny, wouldl be conserved and transformed into a café and community room, with apartments overhead.

The scheme also includes a landscaped public walkway along the River Nanny, featuring seating areas and green spaces.

Meath County Council received seven submissions/observations on the plans.

Last week planners requested further information in relation to the proposal and the developer has a six month period in which to respond. The further information sought is in relation to a number points including flood risk at the site, surface water drainage, conservation, transportation, public open space, landscape and visual, density, social infrastructure assessment, universal design and has also requested that the applicant respond to the points made in the third party submissions.
