Navan native leads the way in helping secure Swedish football title in last day drama

Navan man Cian Murtagh scored twice as his Swedish side, Primetime FC secured the country's 4th Division league victory in dramatic fashion on Saturday.

The Kalmar-based outfit went into the final day of games in the Southeastern Småland League on 47 points needing nothing less than a victory over Nybro IF while their nearest rivals Borgholm IFC, sitting on 50 points needed only a draw against Timmernabbens IF to claim the title.

Murtagh scored the opening two goals in a 4-0 win over Nybro, but the final whistle only brought some added minutes of tension as the Primetime players waited on the result from Borgholm IFC. The celebrations properly began when the result came through that the league leaders had been toppled 2-1 by Timmernabbens, Primetime snatching the title on goal difference.

Former Parkvilla player Murtagh (21), has made a strong impact for Primetime FC since impressing in a trial in 2023.

This season his 14 league goals have helped the Swedish east coast side to secure back to back league titles and ensure promotion.

The Navan native now has the opportunity to complete the League and Cup double when Primetime face Husqvarna FF in the decider on Wednesday, the 8th of October.

Cian, whose family hail from Woodview in Navan, played with Parkvilla from a young age, right up to under 16 level, and was under the guidance of manager Eddie Reilly where his talent stood out.

"I'm absolutely delighted to have won the title, it's incredible. We’ve come a long way from being in fifth place and nine points behind to becoming champions again, and scoring those two goals made winning the league so much more special." said a delighted Murtagh.

After three years in Sweden, the winger hopes to make a decision on his future in the coming weeks.
