Toole support for Steen ahead of nomination deadline
Meath East Independent TD, Gillian Toole has nominated Maria Steen for the presidential election, bringing the conservative campaigner closer to the 20 oireachtas nominations needed for the ballot paper.
Ms Steen had already received two nominations from Meath, Aontu leader Peadar Toibin (Meath West) and Independent Senator, Sharon Keogan.
Deputy Toole confirmed last night that she would be nominating Ms Steen, and this morning Minister for State Marian Harkin indicated she would also be signing the nomination papers.
Ms Steen requires 20 signed nominations from either TDs or Senators to get on the ballot paper and the deadline for the close of nominations is tomorrow.
Deputy Tóibín said that 12 Oireachtas members have already signed Ms Steen's nomination papers and two more have indicated they will do so today.
The four Independent Ireland TDs will announce their intentions at 12.15pm and if they agree to nominate her, she would then have 18 nominations, two short of what is needed.
Deputy Toibin said a number of other TDs were also considering nominating Ms Steen.
"People want a real democratic choice. I urge independent TDs and Senators to stand up for democracy and let the people decide," said Deputy Toibin.
