Charlie McDonagh of Castlemeadows, Ring Road, Trim, was sentenced to a total of 10 months in jail for a series of shop lifting offences.

The 23-year-old pleaded guilty to a raft of charges at the local district court, which heard that the defendant had a total of 74 previous convictions. Of those 48 were in respect of thefts.

The offences spanned from 2020 to last year, involving the theft of an assortment of property, such as alcohol, a hoover, a laptop and sweets and energy drinks.

These were taken from businesses including Circle K, Applegreen, Corrys, DID Electrical and Tesco in Drogheda and Supervalu in Enfield.

Judge McKiernan took into account that the defendant had previous convictions for similar type offences. Some went back over a period of time which couldn’t be dealt with because the defendant didn’t turn up in court, she pointed out.

She backdated the sentence to 16th August. She fixed bail for appeal of self €200 and independent surety of €2,000 cash to be lodged in court.
