Thomas Ashe lecture to focus on transport
Sinn Fein's plan for a 21st Century Transport System will be the topic for the Annual Thomas Ashe Commemorative Lecture which will take place on Tuesday, 23rd September at 7:30pm in the Ashbourne House Hotel.
The guest speaker will be Sinn Féin spokesperson on Transport, Pa Daly TD. The event will be hosted by Deputy Darren O’Rourke and Cllr Helen Meyer.
Deputy Daly will use the occasion to outline Sinn Féin’s plan for "a modern all-Ireland transport system fit for the 21st century," with a specific focus on the pressing issues facing County Meath.
Speaking ahead of the event, Deputy O'Rourke said: "This is the ninth Annual Thomas Ashe Commemorative Lecture. Every year we try to provide a platform for discussion and debate on important issues. The provision of a 21st century transport system is just such an issue, and has profound impacts on the environment as well as the social, cultural, political and economic development of our county and our island.
"The chronic traffic congestion plaguing our main roads and urban centres underscores the urgent need for strategic investment. This must include not only essential maintenance and repairs but also critical improvements to notorious bottlenecks and hazards such as at Kilmoon Cross to Rath Roundabout on the N2 and at Slane.
"A major priority remains the delivery of the long-promised Navan rail line, a vital piece of infrastructure for the county’s future development. In the interim, immediate improvements to bus services are required to meet growing public demand.
"The lecture will also focus on the need to encourage active travel by providing safe, high-quality walking and cycling infrastructure across the county.
"Transport is a major issue for people across Meath. We need a credible plan that delivers real solutions, from better roads and public transport to safe walking and cycling routes. Deputy Daly’s address will set out that positive vision. Everyone is welcome to attend," he said.
