Implementation of traffic calming measures on N2

An Ashbourne Municipal District councillor said that there have been a number of complaints submitted about the traffic light sequencing along the N2 between Kilmoon Cross and Rath roundabout.

Cllr Helen Meyer raised the issue at Ashbourne’s MD Meeting on Monday 1st September and suggested considering every possible measure to improve the flow of traffic along the N2 between these two points.

Cllr Meyer suggested the removal of particular traffic lights, the resequencing of traffic lights, installation of a roundabout or roundabouts, widening of the road within the existing carriageway and that this report be prepared within a three month period.

Meath County Council received formal approval from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) back in 2019, to appoint Roughan O’Donovan Aecom as technical consultants to progress a scheme on the N2 National Primary Route between Rath and Kilmoon.

The recommended option to be brought forward for assessment and development proposed a new route corridor to the west of the existing N2.

TII responded at the beginning of 2023 in support of the scheme, but stating that there was no funding available at the time to progress the scheme.

The scheme is paused pending formal approval and funding to move to the next stage, which is Design and Environmental Evaluation.
