Plenty of Meath involvement at recent Hurling for Cancer event

The very popular annual event run by horse racing legends Jim Bolger and Davy Russell raises vital funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

There was plenty of Meath interest at this year's Hurling for Cancer event, which took place at Netwatch Cullen Park in Carlow last Monday. Among the array of celebs and sports stars who took to the field of play were Aisling O’Reilly, Liz Lawless and Mark Molloy. Sports commentator and Ratoath native O‘Reilly impressed and scored 1-1 for Davy Russell’s Best. Trim hurler Molloy lined out for the opposition, Jim Bolger's stars, while Meath u-23 and Kiltale camogie player, Lawless joined O'Reilly on Russell’s outfit.

Off the field, former Meath manager Colm O’Rourke, former National Hunt jockey Barry Geraghty, Meath referee David Gough and Irish Flat Champion Jockey Colin Keane were all involved as officials, umpires and maor uisces.

Jim Bolger’s side were victorious on the day and came out on top on a scoreline of 9-25 to 8-14. There was a packed crowd at the Carlow pitch to watch the very popular annual event. The match was shown live on TG4.

Hurling for Cancer Research was founded in 2011 by Jim Bolger and Davy Russell when Jim challenged Davy and his colleagues to a hurling match to raise funds for cancer research. Since then, the event has helped raise almost €1.7 million for the Irish Cancer Society.
