Meath county councillor attending rally in support of banned Palestine Action
Two Independent councillors, Alan Lawes from Navan and Cieran Perry from Dublin are attending the weekly Palestinian support protest this evening in Newry and displayed t-shirts and posters supporting Palestine Action. Their actions may risk possible arrest.
Palestine Action (PAG) is proscribed as a terrorist organisation in the UK and protests have been ongoing to have the ban lifted. To date, over 700 people have been arrested in connection with supporting Palestine Action. Over 532 people were arrested in London over the weekend alone for carrying placards opposing the banning of the activist group
Cllr Alan Lawes from Meath County Council said: “Our intention is to expose the hypocrisy of Kier Starmer’s British Government in banning a non-violent direct action protest group while also supplying weapons to slaughter children in Gaza”
Cllr Cieran Perry, Independent Group leader on Dublin City Council said: “Britain has been complicit in the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank and is now using draconian legislation to silence ordinary people calling out genocide.
Cllr Lawes and Cllr Perry have been active for years in supporting the people of Palestine and have organised local community protests to highlight the Israeli slaughter in Gaza.
Cllr Laws continued: “Our actions tonight are in solidarity with the peaceful protesters arrested in London at the weekend in a disgraceful attempt to muzzle voices opposing the Israeli genocide”
Cllr Perry continued “We refuse to allow a British Prime Minister dictate where and when Irish people can protest on the island of Ireland. Irish people have a proud history of opposing oppression and will continue to do so while the genocide in Gaza continues”
Both councillors have called for an immediate ceasefire and have criticised the deliberate starvation of children, women and men in Gaza.
