Woman cut from car wreckage in latest ‘blackspot’ accident
Following yet another serious accident at the notorious Mullagh Cross between Summerhill and Dunboyne, residents are calling for urgent road safety works before someone is killed.
A woman had to be cut from a car following an accident at the cross in an incident just over a week ago. This follows on from countless accidents at the cross over the years, including three in seven days in July last year.
Local resident, Con Cronin is imploring Meath County Council to change the system at the cross. “Please wake up before someone fails to wake up. Ramp up the junction before somebody is killed”.
He recalled the accident that took place on Monday of last week, at approximately 1.30pm.
“A lady had to be cut out of her car. The cross was closed for approximately two hours. I have lived nearby for 40 years and l have seen a serious amount of accidents at the cross. I have expressed my concern to politicians and local county councillors. The warning sign instructing drivers to slow down is complete nonsense.”
He said the ramps that are in place at Skryne and Mulhussey to slow down drivers, are very effective and would cost a fraction of the signs at Mullagh cross.
Cllr Caroline O’Reilly has once again called for urgent progress on the long-overdue Safety Scheme for the cross.
“This latest accident highlights what local residents already know—Mullagh Cross is simply not safe. This junction continues to pose a serious danger to all road users, particularly with the volume of trucks and agricultural vehicles using it daily.
“After years of local concern, it’s extremely welcome to see this vital safety scheme for Mullagh Cross progressing. This junction has long been below standard in terms of visibility and layout, and it’s encouraging that a preferred option has now been identified and safety audits completed,” said Cllr O’Reilly.
“This project has been through an extensive process, and while progress may seem slow, it’s important that we get it right.
“The proposed realignment and safety upgrades will make a real difference for everyone who uses this busy route, including residents, commuters, and farm traffic,” added Cllr O’Reilly.
She confirmed that the next step is for funding authority approval to move to Phase 4, after which the plans will go on public display.
“I’ll continue pushing this at every level. It’s a crucial piece of infrastructure for our area and has been a priority of mine since day one.”
