Dunderry ladies' marathon efforts raise €4,370 for Breast Cancer Ireland
Five determined women from Dunderry took on the incredible challenge of a marathon distance walk of 26 miles on Sunday, 27th April 2025, in support of Breast Cancer Ireland.
Orla Crocock, Stella Keyes, Frances Nugent , Doreen Dempsey, and Marion Murtagh set off at 6.30 am from Dunderry GAA pitch, walking a carefully planned route that took them through Robinstown, Navan, Ardbraccan, St. Ultan’s GAA pitch, Moyagher, Jamestown, Tullaghanstown, Meadstown, and finally back to Dunderry.
This wasn’t a journey they took lightly. The women trained for weeks, often rising early for long walks along the royal canal and in the countryside, building up the endurance needed for a full marathon distance. Their hard work paid off—not only in steps taken, but in funds raised.
In total, the group raised €4,367 for Breast Cancer Ireland.
As part of their efforts, the walkers also wanted to offer a personal gesture of kindness to someone in Meath who is currently undergoing cancer treatment. With this in mind, they purchased a €200 voucher for a relaxing overnight stay in Bective Apartment—a small gift of comfort and care.
The day was filled with support and emotion. Friends and family joined them along the route, walking stretches of the journey and cheering them on.
A special moment came at the finish line, where five cancer warriors met them with open arms and encouragement.
The walkers also gave a heartfelt thanks to Michael 'Fiddler' Smith, who followed their entire route in his car, ensuring the group had refreshments and support throughout the day.
And to photographer Ian O'Brien, who captured the spirit and memories of the day through his lens, ensuring these special moments will be remembered for years to come.
This 42.19km walk was more than just a physical challenge—it was a symbol of strength, solidarity, and hope.
Dunderry is proud of Orla, Stella, Frances, Doreen, and Marion for their determination, compassion, and community spirit.
