Cumann na mBunscol Finals: Kildalkey stage the late, late show

DIV 2 CAMOGIE - Kildalkey 3-2 Boardsmill 2-3

For so long Boardsmill looked like they were going to win this Div 2 Camogie title on Friday until that is, everything was changed in an instant.

The change that transformed the fortunes of both teams was Kildalkey's third goal - and it could hardy have been fashioned in more dramatic circumstances. Eimear Guy put Boardsmill one ahead with a super score from play as the gripping contest drew to a conclusion.

Kildalkey - spirited, determined and willing to fight - launched one more attack. They still believed. Emma Monaghan won the ball on the right near the Boardsmill goals. From an awkward angle she shot goalwards. The shot was powerful, decisive. The ball deceived just about everyone and ended up in the net.

There was hardly time for the puck out. Kildalkey had snatched victory at the death. What drama. Some of their players did a little jig o'joy and understandably so. With the help of goals from the ever enterprising and busy Robin Healy and Fia Reilly and a point from the equaling enterprising and lively Eimear Guy, Boardsmill led 2-1 to 1-0 at the interval with Holly Evans brilliantly bagging a goal for Kildalkey.

The reason why Boardsmill were in front was as simple as 1,2,3. They were by some distance the better team. After the break the contest much more even. A further point from Mahon greatly helped Boardsmill's cause but Kildalkey wouldn't go away. Anna Walsh got a second goal and Evans and Maria Muldoon landed points for them to leave the sides level as the contest drew to a close.

Then Guy edged her team in front. It looked like it would be enough. Until, that is, Monaghan won the ball and struck so late and so dramatically. Both goalkeepers featured prominently with Aoife Casey making a string of super stops for Kildalkey while her counterpart Annalise Kelly also showed super-sharp reflexes. Alannah Corcoran was also outstanding for Boardsmill. There were other heroes on both sides.

However Kildalkey's willingness to battled to the end was richly rewarded. Glory was theirs.
