David MullenThe Lismullen area is better known for Gaelic football but, obviously, that is all changing - and fast.
In recent times the school has made wonderful progress in the game of camogie. Last year they were defeated in the Shield final. This time they were the victors on the big day - and deservedly so.
This win represented a giant step forward for the game in the school with the team overcoming a battling Longwood side that was packed with it's own heroes but who had to settle for second place on this occasion.
Lismullen were really up for this game and they made light of the rain to take a firm grip on this encounter from very early on. They led 2-1 to 0-0 at the interval and pushed on from there.
The team in black had more than their share of heroes and right up there was Cara Reynolds who hit two super goals while Rose Reynolds also made a massive contribution with 1-1 as well as much more besides.
Poppy Kiernan was also a big threat for her team going forward and ended up slotting over three points, including one memorable effort from play.
Longwood showed plenty of neat, skilful touches but they were unable to make many inroads into the strong Lismullen defence. Both goalkeepers could take a bow after this game. Scarlett Kiernan made some fine stops for the winners while her counterpart Mia Holton was sharp and alert throughout as she needed to be.
Lucy Coules also displayed an admirable sharpness to score Longwood's only goal after a mother and father of the goalmouth scramble. Her colleague Mary Cully also skilfully fired over the bar from a free.
Longwood just couldn't muster enough scores to halt Lismullen's journey to a famous victory that underlined how camogie is really starting to take off in that part of the world.
