‘It’s a lasting legacy and a true reflection of Trim’s strengths and beauty’
A ONCE graffiti-stained laneway in Mornington Heights Estate has been transformed into a vibrant celebration of community, biodiversity, and mental wellbeing thanks to a creative partnership between Trim Family Resource Centre and Jigsaw Meath.
Spanning three walls along the path leading to St Michael’s and St Mary’s Primary School, St Patrick’s Church, and the heart of Trim, the mural was brought to life by local artist Meghann Quinn, further building on work that had been done last year.
The mural was officially unveiled at a ceremony on Wednesday morning of last week. Speaking at the event, Diane O'Reilly from Trim Family Resource Centre said: "This project brought people of all ages together in a fun and creative way to explore important topics like biodiversity and mental wellbeing. It’s a lasting legacy for the town and a true reflection of Trim’s strengths and beauty.
"We are absolutely delighted to welcome everyone to the launch of our beautiful new community mural, right here in the laneways beside Trim Family Resource Centre. It’s a very special day for us all, one that wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible collaboration, creativity, and support of our local community."
She thanked Meath County Council’s Creative Ireland and Cruinniú na nÓg programmes for their generous funding and belief in the power of community-led art, adding "your support has brought not just colour to these walls, but joy and meaning to the people who pass them every day".
Community involvement was central to the project from the start. Design ideas were shaped during an intergenerational art workshop hosted by CareChoice Trim, involving nursing home residents, Prosper Trim members, and students from Boyne Community School and Scoil Mhuire. Their stories and creativity helped inform a mural that truly reflects the heart of Trim.
In addition to the workshop, a community survey and on-site feedback helped gather local thoughts on what should be featured on the walls—ensuring the final piece spoke directly to the people of Trim.
To further deepen community engagement, a primary school art competition invited children to explore the key themes of biodiversity and mental health and what they meant to them.
Fifteen young artists were selected, with five receiving €10 gift vouchers kindly donated by Antonia’s Bookstore and 10 others awarded certificates of participation from St Mary’s Primary School and Trim Educate Together.
Artist Meghann Quinn spoke at the unveiling about her plans to add final touches: “We’ll be including native birds, wildflowers, and the words ‘Mind Your Mind’—a simple reminder to pause, breathe, and appreciate the beauty around us.”
Brenda Bradley from Jigsaw Meath commented: “We hear the word ‘community’ a lot, but when local organisations and individuals come together and truly invest in it, it becomes an invisible support system—something that can help you through the hard days or gives you a place to celebrate the good ones. It's the simple things, a friendly chat with a shop assistant, or just sharing a kind word in passing, volunteering with your GAA club, or appreciating a painted wall on your way to school. That sense of belonging needs to be nurtured.
"And that's what this project was about bringing community members together to chat and share their thoughts through art building new and existing connections within their community. Which is one of the most important protective factors."
During the event, a special ceremony honoured the 15 children whose creativity helped shape the mural. They included art competition winners: Rose Nugent, Isabella Rose, Lucy Bligh, Zoe Ineye, Jackson Byrne-Maguire; and certificate recipients: Ola, Zoe May, Tee, Anna C, Kate O’Donnell, Emmy, Fletcher Phillips, Patrick Haworth Moore, Ruby Marras Daly, Nova O'Brien.
The project also received valued support from Cllr Ronan Moore and others from Trim Tidy Towns who were also credited for repainting adjoining walls affected by graffiti. They also thanked local TD Aisling Dempsey for attending the unveiling.
"This mural is more than decoration - it’s a testament to what’s possible when a community comes together to share, connect, and create something meaningful," concluded Brenda.
