O'Bric reflects on Leinster Final defeat

The Meath u-20s were defeated by Louth in the Leinster Final on Wedensday at Newbridge.

Meath manager Cathal O'Bric watched on as his side fell to defeat against a very talented energetic Louth u-20 team in the Leinster final on Wednesday evening.

O'Bric did say that things didn't go to plan from an attacking perspective on the night but gave huge credit to Louth for the way that they performed.

"We didn't really spark on the day. In the games previous we had shown a real crispness in attack and we never allowed the opposition to build a lead. That wasn't really there tonight. It wasn't for the lack of effort though and all credit to Louth, it was a fantastic performance on their part. They really showed their pace tonight, their finishing was really good, it was an excellent performance from them."

Louth took control of the contest in the third quarter and O'Bric felt that after the neighbours had opened up a gap, his side felt the pressure of trying to chase the game.

"They opened up a gap in the third quarter and we were forcing it a bit to try and get back into the game. When you are forcing those longer shots, often they can go marginally left or right. I am hugely proud of this group, they have been amazing to work with. They are hugely disappointed to lose but the benefits that this group will get from this campaign are massive. A lot of them are eligible for next year and there are plenty of lads there well equipped to push on and play for Meath at senior level in years to come."

O'Bric was immensely proud of what his lads achieved this year and gave them huge credit for what they have achieved.

"They have reached the last eight counties in Ireland. 26 teams were sitting at home watching the telly tonight, Meath were one of the teams still left at the business end of the championship. They deserve huge credit for that. They've had a long journey, tonight was game six for them. I'm immensely proud of them."

O'Bric was keen to praise Louth and his opposing manager on the night Fergal Reel for their success.

"I applaud Louth for the fantastic work that they are doing. A first title in 44 years is a huge landmark for them and they are benefiting from some fantastic underage structure. Fergal (Reel) has been very instrumental in building that and I'd like to offer a huge congratulations to him and his management team."

The Principal teacher is optimistic for next year's Meath u-20s side and did say that if he is given the chance to be at the helm, he would relish the chance.

There is a very talented crew coming behind these lads. I know we are losing a few from this panel to senior football but when you look at the talent of John Harkin, Michael McIvor, Cian Commons, Sam Jordan and lads like that, you have to be very optimistic for next year. The talent is there for next year and if I have the chance to take it on again, I'd love to.
