Somba returns to land the 4-Mile Moynalty race

ATHLETICS Record crowds descend on north Meath village

Former Dunboyne AC and Ratoath AC runner Peter Somba returned to familiar territory on Easter Sunday and led home a field of 390 runners to claim the honours at the Moynalty 4-Mile Road Race.

The biggest field in their six years of running this race descended on Moynalty village and while the day started dull and showery the race was run in near perfect conditions with Somba winning in a time of 20 minutes, 42 seconds, 22 seconds ahead of Dundrum South Dublin AC's Patrick Elliott and 50 seconds clear of Gavin Callery.

The first Lady home was a Rachel Birt (no club), followed by Rose Finnegan from Bohermeen AC with Shercock AC's Abbey Smith in third.

The ladies team title went to the well represented hosts, while Dunboyne AC were the first men's team home.

The race was officially started by a former member Ciaran Ward who unfortunately had to retire from running due to illness, including recovering from cancer recently and now dealing with Frontotemporal dementia.

Ciaran was a very active member of the Moynalty club for over seven years and always participated in various races all over the country. The club and everyone associated with the Moynalty AC 4-Mile Road Race wishes Ciaran well.
