Death of commentator and former Meath GAA PRO, Brendan Cummins
Dunsany clubman was face of County Board for two decades
The death has occurred of the LMFM GAA broadcaster, and former Meath County GAA County Board public relations officer, Brendan Cummins. He was aged 76 and had been battling illness for some years.
The Dunsany clubman served as County Board PRO for the best part of two decades, from 1988 to 2009, during the glorious Sean Boylan era, and became head of sport at LMFM in 1992, a position he held until 2017. He continued to commentate on Meath games for the local radio station until the beginning of this year's National League, broadcasting the Cavan match alongside Mattie Kerrigan a month ago.
Son of Jack Cummins, who played for Meath in their first All-Ireland final in 1939, and his wife, Jenny, Brendan was a founding member of Dunsany GFC, and was captain of the club's first team to reach a junior championship final, in 1972, against Peter Moore's Ballinabrackey, the victors. It would be over half a century before Dunsany would achieve that holy grail last year, which he was overjoyed to see. He played for the Meath Minors in 1966 and 1967, with a short run on the Meath senior side in 1970.
In 1984, he edited the Dunsany club's GAA centenary history, and he was a president of the club at the time of his passing, and a county board delegate. His programme for the Meath senior football final 2005 was voted the best provincial county final programme.
He was in constant demand as a master of ceremonies at book launches, race day events, dinner dances, table quizzes, and GAA and sporting functions of all types across the county, his widespread knowledge of all things Gaelic games simply rolling off his tongue.
Brendan Cummins was honoured as special guest at the 2017 Meath senior county final, throwing in the ball between Simonstown Gaels and Summerhill, and in 2022, was inducted into the Meath GAA Hall of Fame.
Living in Wilkinstown, and predeceased in 2021 by his wife, Margaret, and his brother, Sean, Dundalk in 2023, Brendan is survived by his daughter, Mairead; brother, Pat, Kilmessan; sisters Mary, Tipperary, and Nuala, Dublin, extended family, relatives, friends and neighbours.
The Meath Chronicle extends sympathy to the family, friends, and colleagues of Brendan. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
