Council urged to take over former Kildalkey NS

Trim councillors asked for an update in relation to the former Kildalkey National School building at their December meeting last week and for Meath Co Council to consider taking it over.

The derelict state of the site, which has been empty since a new school opened in the village nine years ago, has been thrown into sharp focus particularly following a fire at the property over Halloween.

There had been some confusion over who was responsible for the site as although it is owned by the St Finian's Diocesan Trust, the Department of Education had a leasehold interest over the property, which is understood now to be relinquished.

At Friday's meeting of Trim Municipal District, Cllr Noel French asked if there was any further progress regarding the issuing of a derelict site notice. He also asked the council to consider taking it over pointing out that they are still looking for a site for a playground in that area and that it is a central site.

Cllr Ronan Moore said he understood that a derelict notice had been issued in July or August and that follow up conversations are taking place.

Director of Services Des Foley said he would get an update for their next meeting.
