Issue of motorists 'jumping the lights' at Navan junctions raised by McMenamin

The problem of people 'jumping' traffic lights, particularly at St Martha's Bridge in Navan, has been raised by local election candidate, Dr Séamus McMenamin.

He has welcomed the announcement that traffic light cameras, which will capture drivers breaking red lights for automatic prosecution, will be in place by early next year.

The announcement was made by Green Party Minister Eamon Ryan who said the cameras, which catch motorists who break the law by taking a picture of their registration when they fail to stop at a red light, will initially be installed in Dublin before being rolled out nationwide.

"I have been approached by a lot of people concerned about the sequencing of traffic light signals and motorists jumping the lights. There is a particular problem on the Dublin road at the junction with St Martha's Bridge and there have been several accidents here," Dr MCMenamin said.

He has called on Meath Co Council to organise a review of the traffic light sequence across Navan. "The traffic flows in Navan have changed rapidly due to the Navan 2030 roadworks and changes to direction of traffic on some roads. The continual traffic jams in Athlumney and Johnstown need to be managed in order to give people confidence that these changes will benefit us all in the long term.
