Brush with genius... Nicole wins at Texaco Children's Art competition...again!

Thirteen-year-old local student Nicole Doherty was named a winner in the 70th Texaco Children's Art Competition taking third prize in her age category, while 13 other Meath students were also presented with Special Merit Awards for their artwork.

Nicole Doherty from Clarke Art Studio, Ratoath, won third prize in the 12-13 years category for her work entitled ‘Contemplating’. Nicole’s artwork is described by final adjudicator, Gary Granville, Professor Emeritus of Education at the National College of Art and Design as “a deep, thoughtful and evocative portrait of contemplation, in both style and composition.”

No stranger to the competition, Nicole won first prize in the 9-11 year age category in 2022.

In addition, 13 Meath winners each won Special Merit Awards for artworks that Professor Granville said ‘demonstrated high levels of skill and imagination’.

They were Catherine Egan (15), a pupil at Scoil Mhuire, Trim; Richie Lynam (12) from St. Seachnall's National School, Dunshaughlin; Fernando Alexandre (8) from Ratoath Junior National School, as well as Ayda Doherty (14); Vivienne Collins (13); Patricia Simonavicius (11); Abigail Winston (11); Abigail Crigan (11); Olga Bilot (10); Julian Zaman (10); Olivia Leung (8); Zara Fay (7) and Harry Fitzpatrick (7), who all came from Clarke Art Studio.

The Texaco Children’s Art Competition is popularly regarded as the longest-running sponsorship in the history of arts sponsoring in Ireland, with an unbroken history that dates back to the very first Competition held in 1955. This year, as has been the case throughout its life, it has been a platform on which young artists from Meath and counties throughout Ireland have had their talents recognised and their creativity commended.
