Tones lose their way against the Gaels

FEIS CUP

Simonstown Gaels 2-15

Wolfe Tones 0-9

Phillip Ward

A half time scoreline of 2-9 to 0-5 in favour of the hosts left Wolfe Tones too far adrift in this Feis Cup semi-final clash.

The issue was never in doubt despite a much improved second half from the Oristown parish men.

Tones hit five first half wides in a row as they trailed by 0 -2 to 1-4 and they would rue this profligacy.

Indeed they could have been further behind at this stage but Shane Glynn had made a fine block to avert a goal as Simonstown pounced on a short kickout.

Simonstown netted their second goal just before half-time and while Ciaran O Gallchóir in the Tones goals made a brilliant save he couldn’t prevent the rebound from hitting the net.

This goal followed a good goal-scoring chance at the far end which saw Rioghan Ó Beaglaioch through on goal but unluckily his shot went over rather than under the crossbar.

Brughach Ó Fionnagain had earlier had a goal chance but his shot was blocked at the cost of a ’45. Alan Callaghan hit a trade mark long range point just before the interval.

The second-half was closer with Tones tighter in defence but the scoring burst they needed to close the gap never materialised.
