Urgent road safety measures needed for Borallion road

A footpath, lighting and a bus stop are urgently required for the Borallion Road, as well as safety measures at its junction with the Trim Road, last week's meeting of Navan Municipal Council heard.

The road known locally as The Borallion or the L8010, links the Trim Road at Balreask down to the L4009 at Kilcarn and is home to over 30 residents according to Meath County Council Cathaoireach, Cllr Tommy Reilly, who says the safety of the area is severely compromised due to heavy volumes of traffic and lack of public lighting, a footpath and a bus stop.

“In the past locals used to enjoy walking and cycling on The Borallion but it’s just not possible any more due to the heavy volumes of traffic. It is at its worst in the morning and evening times but it’s almost constant at this stage,” said Cllr Reilly .

“There are major developments planned to take place along this route, including a slipway to the M3 motorway and it is imperative that plans for lighting, a footpath and a bus stop are included in this programme of works for the safety of pedestrians and locals.”

The Mayor, Cllr Eddie Fennessy said his grandmother was born and reared on The Borallion and he still has family living there.

"As Navan expanded over the years, traffic volume on the road has increased massively. Lorries, trucks, vans and cars use the road day and night. It has become quite dangerous for local residents and I commend Cllr Reilly for making this request.

Cllr Padraig Fitzsimons agreed there was a need for a bus stop on the Borallion and spoke of the heavy volume of traffic on that road.

"People are taking terrible risks at that junction," he said.

It was pointed out that safety works at that junction would be carried out as part of the Pathfinder programme for the Navan to Trim Cycle Scheme.

The meeting heard the Council does not have immediate plans to install footpath and public lighting along the entire length of the Borallion but, some works will progress as part of road improvement projects and developments in general along the road.
