Cllr David Gilroy

Two more local election candidates out of the stalls

Independent councillor, David Gilroy, officially launched his 2024 election campaign in The Darnley Lodge, Athboy. First elected in 2014 as an independent councillor for the Athboy area, Cllr Gilroy spoke at length about the great strides the area has made in the last 10 years. Working with and for the community is his mantra.

"As chairman of the Athboy Development Forum, I see first hand the importance of communities being organised and the benefits of having a local voice. The forum has benefited form over €500,000 in grants in the last five years, which has allowed the development of the Convent Community Centre and St James Hall."

Speaking of his priorities for the future, he listed continuing to develop the facilities needed for the area, completing the anticipated bus stop, providing the solution to the parking issues that impact the area and future proofing the area for the needs of all its resident. He wants to see the Athboy Public realm plan continue through the design phase, a proper playground solution, as well as traffic calming.

Meanwhile, Sinn Fein has selected Peter Caffrey from Oldcastle to stand in the upcoming local elections in the Kells Local Electoral Area (LEA). The party had already nominated sitting councillor, Michael Gallagher, and Kells man, Oliver 'Figgy' Curran, to run in that area.

Mr Caffrey's campaign will focus "on delivering tangible improvements in housing, community facilities, amenities, and local infrastructure. The dominance of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael must be challenged, as their tenure has not adequately addressed the needs of our constituents. The local elections represent a chance to commence the journey towards meaningful change."

Speaking after Mr Caffrey was selected by the party membership, Deputy Johnny Guirke said his party is fielding candidates with strong community ties and a commitment to addressing local concerns.
