Slane Shed members start work on the Field Kitchen for Slane River Rescue

New mobile field kitchen for Meath River Rescue ready to be unveiled

The new field kitchen built by members of Slane and District Men's Shed will be on display at the organisation's open morning on Friday (15th March).

Slane Men's Shed will showcase the kitchen, which is being donated to Meath River Rescue, while Cllr Wayne Harding, chairman of LMETB will launch a series of courses which will be available to the members over the coming months.

The open morning will also give members of the public and other Shed groups a chance to see the various projects the Slane Shed has been involved in.

Chairman, Kevin Macken will welcome the guests at 10.30am and this will be followed by the official launch of the Slane Shed/LMETB Education Programme 24 by Cllr Wayne Harding, chair of LMETB.

Cllr Harding will then launch the mobile field kitchen made by SDMS members for Meath River Rescue and this will be followed by a tour of the shed's facilities.

Slane and District Men's Shed will be hosting six courses with LMETB tutors - Mindfulness, Positive Psychology, Cookery and Healthy Eating, Making the Most of Your Computer/Tablet, and Photography.

Along with Age Action Ireland, they are also putting on A Digital Skills Programme made up of one to one sessions of two hours each by five weeks with individual tutors for each learner/improver.

Using the shed's own tutor, they will also be putting on a four week Hand Pottery Course.

All courses are free to Shed members and will run between April and September this year.

The members of the shed decided to build a field kitchen for Meath River Rescue, spurred on by the heartbreak of recent tragedies, which saw volunteers from Meath River Rescue out in all weathers searching the Boyne.

They decided to do something to make things a little more comfortable for the volunteers and came up with the idea of building a field kitchen, which will allow members make their own hot drinks and will have equipment to keep food warm and store food.

The kitchen is also rigged with floodlights and a gazebo to provide shelter along with a table.

Slane and District Men’s Shed opened its purpose built premises in September 2019. The shed is well equipped for a wide range of activities -woodwork, art, gym, cooking, computers, games, pool, bowls and more recently a metalwork shop was added.
