Cole steps down as Meath camogie manager

After just a few months in charge Neil Cole has stepped down from the role of managing the Meath camogie team.

The Rathmolyon man has stepped aside "for medical reasons" and is taking a break from coaching for the immediate future at least.

"I wish all involved in Meath camogie the best of luck going into the future but I'm stepping away for medical reasons," he told the Meath Chronicle.

"We wish Neil the very best and thank him for his work with the county team to this point," a statement from Meath Camogie also added.

Cole will be replaced by his brother Gary Cole who - along with Limerick man Thomas Moloney - will guide the fortunes of the Meath team for the immediate future as joint managers.

Neil was appointed as Meath manager after his predecessor Brendan Skehan stepped down towards the end of last year.

Cole brought his brother and Moloney into his backroom team as selectors/coaches while Neil Heffernan and Conor Darby were brought in as fitness coaches.

Now Moloney and Gary Cole have stepped up to take control. Moloney, who lives, in Monasterevin, is also involved in coaching the Roscommon hurlers ensuring he has a full schedule indeed.

So far in their Div 2A National League campaign Meath have defeated Cavan and drawn with Westmeath.

Neil Cole has a lengthy, varied and successful careers as both a player and coaching.

While he tasted Jubilee Cup success as a player with his native Rathmolyon he was involved coaching under-age players in Trim for years.

He enjoyed a great deal of success in that role winning over 30 with under-age teams at various levels.

He also took charge of the Trim senior hurlers and guided them to the 2020 SHC title, their first in 19 years.

He spent a time managing the Cavan hurling team and the Maynooth hurlers before accepting the challenge of guiding the Meath camogie team after his predecessor Brendan Skehan stepped down at the end of last season.

Meath take on Derry next in their Div 2A campaign but this time the familiar figure of Neil Cole will not be on the sideline conducting affairs.
